All 5 living, former presidents join forces for 'One America Appeal'

Is this bipartisanship I’m smelling?

Whatever it is…it’s refreshing.

This morning, we awake to news of the “One America Appeal,” an effort by former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter to help victims of Hurricane Harvey.

The fab five were “inspired to come together in the aftermath” of the hurricane that has displaced one million people and “caused up to $180 billion in damages to over 200,000 homes over a 300-mile path of destruction,” their site says.

In the video announcing the appeal, former President George Bush said people were hurting.

“But as one Texan put it, We’ve got more love in Texas, than water,’” he said.

The main things you need to know:

  • The appeal will expand to include Hurricane Irma.
  • Your money will go to the Houston Harvey Relief Fund, which focuses on the greater Houston region, and the Rebuild Texas Fund, which assists communities across the state.
  • Yes, the donations are tax deductible.
  • No, public tax dollars are not involved. It’s a private effort.
  • Make checks payable to “GBPLF One America Appeal.”
    • GBPLF One America Appeal
      Post Office Box 14141
      College Station, Texas 77841-4141
  • While the ‘One Appeal’ effort is new, the fund itself is not:
    • Donation funds will go into an existing “special account at the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library Foundation, a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization, to ensure 100 cents out of every dollar donated goes to hurricane victims.” Read more here.
