Columnist: This law honors a little girl - and lawmakers are trying to destroy it

There is a proposal at the Legislature (House Bill 2287) that would weaken Shannon’s Law, which made it a felony for randomly firing a weapon within the city limits, according to azcentral.com E.J. Montini.

Not only is the proposed law not helpful, it would dishonor the memory of a lovely 14-year-old girl, Shannon Smith, who was killed by a randomly fired falling bullet.

He goes on to say:

“The chances of such a tragedy happening are slim, so Shannon’s Law isn’t much of a burden on anyone. The backers of HB 2287, which would make it easier for an accused person to weasel out of responsibility, have not been able to produce a single instance of a person being prosecuted under the law for what was an accidental discharge of a weapon.”
